How to Start a Conversation with a Stranger
A useful opening gives the other person a clear topic and an easy way to answer. Start with a question that invites an opinion rather than personal information.
Use a question with a small starting point
“What is a song you would recommend today?” is easier to answer than “Tell me about yourself.” Other openers include “What have you been learning lately?” and “Which fictional place would you visit?”
Make a shared interest specific
If you both selected gaming, ask about a recent game or a mechanic they like. For music, compare an album or a live performance. One interest can be enough; adding popular topics does not guarantee a match.
Build on their answer
Read or listen before choosing your next question. A short follow-up—“What made you like it?”—shows you noticed their answer. Avoid turning the conversation into a checklist.
Keep personal information optional
You do not need a full name, exact location, employer, social-media account, or phone number to have a good conversation. If someone asks for information you do not want to share, decline or leave.
End without pressure
A conversation can finish naturally or immediately. “Thanks for the chat” is enough. Stop and Next are normal parts of random chat; neither person owes the other an explanation.
